My phal is growing mold on its flower spike Male
Default My phal is growing mold on its flower spike

I need advice on the mold growing at the base of the flower stalk and the spike (first picture). When I try to investigate by rubbing my finger on it, it felt sticky like sugar water. I also discovered that the newly opened flowers secretes sugar water/nectar at the base of the flower stalk and the spike (second picture). This nectar cause the mold growth.

My question is:

1) is this normal?

2) is the mold harmful to the plant and people?

3) how do i get rid of it?

Thanks

Necter (sap) is normal, it should not be growing mold. Have you tried rubbing it off with alcohol and a Q-tip?

I don't think that's normal. But I don't know the cause. I would suggest seeing if it can be cleaned off as Joann suggests. If not I would be tempted to cut it away before it spreads.

I have seen black sooty looking mold grow in the spots that get "Happy Sap ".I belive cleaning that spot should be sufficient, but you will have to look closely ....Clean it carefully with a q-tip and alcohol where you see the mold if it all comes off with the sap your good if it appears to actually be growing into the stem you are going to have to watch closely.

Thank you. I will try the alcohol method. I am just concerned about the coming monsoon season in Shanghai where mold can grow on walls and any wet surface. The plant seems to be secreting the nectar again and again. It has 28 flowers....thats going to be one long maintenance.
