What is your favourite medium?

Depends on the plant, and your individual growing conditions. While Rosie doesn't like moss for her Phals, I switched my three Phal species to moss last year, and the results were pretty spectacular. I also grow Masdies and Dendrochilums in moss, and my unmounted Bulbos are in a moss/tree fern mix. But it's likely that my growing conditions are very different from Rosie's.

Stephen is completely right and I should have said that. It does depend on you and your enviroment as well as on the plant.

Some people love growing Phals in moss, for me every Phal I've had in moss had died while I've not had a single one in bark die (yet). On the other hand I love moss for my Masdies and they seem to love it as well.

It really is one of those questions whose answer is... well it depends!

Too true, too true. Like I said, you have to consider your environment as well.

Or, as I tell the novices in my society's Annual Hands-On Workshop, "Do you want this year's secret or last year's secret"?

I am constantly making minor adjustments to either a bark/Perlite mix or a CHC/coir/Perlite mix for my orchids. However, as availability of quality bark at reasonable prices and distributors of the same here in California diminish, I am more and more changing all the plants in my collection to my CHC/Coir/Perlite blend.

I use S/H on all my plants which consist of Catteya alliance, Phals, and a few vandaceous. It really does depend on the plant and environment.
