Bent Phalaenopsis Stem - Please help
Default Bent Phalaenopsis Stem - Please help

Hello, I am new to the forum. I just purchased a beautiful large Phalaenopsis orchid from my local flower shop. When I got home I noticed that the stem was pretty severely bent near the top. The stem is definitely weaker where the bent is located and some of the exterior on the stem is frayed but it is not completely broken through. I now have clipped the stem to a support rod near the bend. This is a mothers day gift and I would hate for it to die. Is there any hope for this plant? Or anything else I can do.
I figured if there was anywhere I can get an answer to this, it would be here. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to OB!

This has happened to quite a few people. Supporting it is about all you can do. The section after the bend may or may not die back.

But on the bright side, the plant itself is not hurt. It will not die from a broken flower spike. And depending on where the break is on the spike, it may send out another spray of flowers from below the break. Could be the gift that keeps on giving!

Thanks for the replies.
I just noticed today that one of the buds at the tip of the flower is starting to bloom, and its past the bend. I am assuming that this is a good sign that the bend will not affect the flowers that are on the stem past the break? Would I be correct?
Any help would be great, thanks again for all the help!

The plant has to push water and nutrients up to the flowers to get them to open. Yes, It is a good sign.
