Just so freaky, I want one! Anyone know a seller over there who sends to Australia?

My Psy. suffered a setback a month or two ago when the cute little bud that was forming turned yellow and blasted. As this is one of my favorites, I was crushed and sulking for days.

I was really worried that it would stop its sequential flowering. Not so! The very next week I could see a new bud beginning to form. I LOVE THESE ORCHIDS!

The new bud opened last night. I really like this bloom - it's not as twisted as the last few, the lip doesn't have the same curl. It's got a new p-bulb pushing out a giant leaf and a new little p-bulb just starting.

My more ungrateful orchids better take note and start showing off otherwise I might just trade them out for a bunch of new Psys!

I've had the same experience with buds blasting. They wait a "round", and then go again. I have also noticed on 2 of my more mature plants that they threw a third inflorescence! At any given time, one of these is in bloom , and often, I have 2-4 flowers going at once.

I, too, might just end up with a room of purely Psychopsis!

Thanks for all the info on these. I bought a psy. Mendenhall 'Hildos' recently with 2 spikes. One is about 2 and a half feet and the other is about a foot tall. I keep wondering when it will start to bud. Patience, I know. It has put on about 3 inches of spike since I got it and I was wondering if it was in need of something because the new area of spike is flat and lighter in color. But, the last couple of "segments" look like the area on yours just before it budded. I can't wait. I think they are so beautiful. I also have 2 papilio flava and a psy. Mendenhall alba that are near blooming size.

Anyone out there have any secrets they can share as to the best culture for them so that I keep them healthy?

Thanks

Default Could It Be a Second Spike?

I know this is a favorite game on the OB, so it's time to play another exciting round of "SPIKE OR P-BULB!??!".

It's pretty early on, but due to the pointiness, I'm casting an early vote for SPIKE! Which would be super cool as that would double the current number of spikes that this little guy is sporting. The mature spike is about 3-3.5 feet long and is proudly growing a little bud.

So what do you think? Spike? P-Bulb?

Hmmm, I don't know psycopsis well but I would go slightly on on the spike side. Looks a bit like the early stages of a growth one of my Oncs had but not quite and I still think probably spike.

Really beautiful! I have the same plant, and every single time it blooms, it's just as amazing as the first! Just wondering, did you ever repot? I'm debating on whether to repot mine or not.

I have to agree with Jeff of the "sputtering." Mine threw 3 buds before I got one that didn't blast.
As too how long before a spike, I monitored the length of each segment as they got smaller and smaller. Finally once a segment reached about 1", the spike stalled for about 4 months, then... tada... bloom.
Care wise, mine is in S/H in a South window which receives fair light. So overall, nothing special.
