Default "Warm" weather phals in New England?

I just ordered two new phals from Oak Hill Gardens, a schilleriana (3-3.5" pot) and an equestris (2" pot).

These are both classified as warm weather orchids, but we tend to keep our house a bit cooler than recommended during the non-summer seasons (oil is money ).

Will I require a terrarium? If so, I was thinking of a summer project to make one (wood, plexi, etc)... are plans readily available for something like this (it's hard to google for)? Any concerns I should have regarding heating, lighting? Any good fans, etc?

Info would be greatly appreciated!

Thumbs up Phalie ho!

In regards to your welcome post! Welcome to OB .. Great source of info here and the people are great too! .. I too have a Baldan's Kaleidoscope, a hybrid 'Melon' and it's a hardy plant. I just bought it a month ago and I haven't killed it! .. LOL ..(all are growing strong!).. It had only a few flowers open, now the whole spike is covered in them. Good luck with yours. There is more to life than Phalies and don't get me wrong .. I love mine! But you just wait at how many other types of orchids there are! You'll get bit once again... and again .. and again. What part of New England are you from?

Welcome to Orchid Board.

I think most hybrids will take warm temps and they will be fine as houseplants. Also you will not need a terrarium unless you want to make a huge one.

Our outside winter temps are below freezing in winter. Inside is better, but usually around 65 degrees fahrenheit. I'm planning on keeping these in a bay window where drafts could be a concern.

I'm from RI... you can view some pictures of my Phal. B's Kaleidoscope.

I mainly purchased the two new Phals based on look, number of flowers, and price ($25 incl shipping for the two).

Thanks for the help!

I was chatting the other night with someone about the schilleriana and he said it has the fragrance of cotton candy and roses. Nice choice. I love the Baldan's. My 'Melon' looks similar except the color of the petals is a much softer peach ..as if the color of the 'veins' and the petal melted into one another. Once I get my camera cable, I will share photos!

It hasn't arrived yet... If all goes well it'll ship Tuesday and arrive Thursday (along with the Phal. Equestris)! Hope it doesn't mind a bit of cold during shipping...?

I'll post pictures when they arrive (though I'm not raising my hopes for spikes this late in the spring).

Yes... I love how the Phal. B's Kaleidoscope looks from far away. The red lines disappear

OMG you have to get the 'Melon'!!!

I attached a picture .. it's not mine but you get an idea of how it looks! and it's even prettier in real life!

Dorothy

That's not the 'Melon' .. but as close a pic as I can find .. the lamina (? the center)is not dark red but a lighter pink. It truely is exquisite!
