They make filters that fit into many humidifiers today that really help with that. (it's a rectangular charcoal filter, I believe.)

I had an ultrasonic humidifier and I didn't like the white dust that it put out. It covered everything in the room. Now I have a Holmes wick humidifier and its doing just fine. I think the only difference between wick filters is the volume of the output.

Thanks for the tip. My water is very hard here also. It sounds like no matter which one I buy, it will not last long unless it is a neon blue which would be terrible for my all white living room where the orchids are going.

There seems to be something wrong with every one or it is blue as I say. Is your Holmes all white?

They should make one just for orchids!!!

Izzie, filters will not remove dissolved minerals. You need to go with reverse osmosis, deionization, or distillation to do that.
