I like the Bayer Advanced for my orchids. It is a systemic and is usually available at Home Depot, Lowes or WalMart. Follow the directions on the label.

I agree with you on baye advanced Shadytrake with one piece of advice ----you have to wacth and be sure it is not the new formula that is supposed to fertilize for three months too. That is all they carry at the Home Depo here so I dont mention it.Absoulutly nothing wrong with this if you can get the old formula without fertilizer built in.

Yes you are right John. The one I buy is concentrated solution w/o fertilizer. I think the one with fertilizer is Bayer Complete?

This one only comes in a concentrate solution and will kill grasshoppers too. The other one I don't think will.

Hate them hoppers!

One warning about Bayer- if it is the 3-in-1, which I use, and works great- be aware that because of the fertilizer included in it, you use a FRACTION of what it says on the label when using it on orchids. As in, a tsp per gallon rather than 4 tbsp that it sometimes calls for.
Otherwise the nitrogen concentration (PPM) is through the roof, and way too high for orchids.

Replied before seeing this post.
All I can get at my Home Depot, Lowes, etc., is the one with the fertilizer built in- even diluted, it works great.

The easiest and least toxic way to get rid of Springtails is to just repot into new medium and clean the plant really well. As long as the medium continues to decompose you will have a problem with Springtails. They really don't hurt anything.

Several have mentioned repotting out of the moss they come in. What should I use for potting material?

You can use new fresh moss, but many new growers prefer bark mix. It's made of chunks of Fir bark (NOT pine bark mulch or similar) and has charcoal and pearlite mixed in. Whatever you use, pre-soak it overnight to get it to "open up" and absorb water. I like the Better-Gro brand and try to stay away from the Shultz or Miracle Grow.
