White Substance Layer on New Vanda Root
Default White Substance Layer on New Vanda Root

Hello,

There is a layer of white substance sticking onto the green root tip of my baby Vanda's new root. I water it with overnight tap water mixed with a tiny bit of fertilizer, diluted according to the fertilizer's package instructions. Initially I thought that the white substance might be the result of too much minerals, so I switched to using distilled water (with no fertilizer added) for one day but the white substance was still there.

I have no idea what this is but I'm afraid that it will eventually kill the green root tip! Ever since I bought the vanda, I have been hanging it in mid-air because the humidity at home is high already.

Does anyone know what the white substance is? Any advice/suggestions are welcome!!

If it is what I think it is, it is normal. But we need a picture to confirm.

I think I'm with Ted on this one.

I'm guessing that Ted's guessing that the thing you're describing are just dead root tip cells.

If that's the case, that's completely normal. Every plant has root tips that slough off dead cells.

Again, need pics to confirm (like everyone else have said).
