Which Home Depot ? What city ? I know some of the garden associates in the coastal stores. I'm surprised by what you found. But this time of year, during the spring rush, there are alot of new associates, especially in the garden dept.

I don't think they care either. I was in Home Depot a week ago, when I found a shopping cart stuffed in a corner of the garden dept. full of dying orchids, pots and all. They were just thrown in there, all the way to the top! I asked the associate if I could take one or two since they were just being thrown out and she pretty much told me no. So I suppose they'd rather just pitch them than even give them away. Sad....

As far as whether they care or not, I'll admit there are a good number that don't- but I really think it depends on the store. As I said, I've been to some bad ones, but I've been to several where they really wanted to do their best.

until they are actually placed in the trash, they are treated the same as any other product. no sales associate at any store is authorized to give you any kind of discount or free product, even if the product is seriously damaged. if the sales associate gave them to you, it would result in mandatory termination. no sales associate is going to risk their job to give a couple of nearly dead plants to a total stranger. if you want to rescue some plants, talk to the store manager. they may be able to give you a discount. or they might not. as Dave said, the plants are usually owned by the grower, not the store. the store may need to return the dead plants when the next shipment arrives, in order to claim a credit on the new shipment.

Kip is right, with the way they buy the plants, and how they're run by corporate, it's out of their hands whether they are allowed to give away or discount neglected plants.
Unfortunately common in many big box stores.

Well, I am back from my trip. It took me two days to get a hold of a manager. He was very polite and said "Ok", but didn't come across as if he really cared. Don't know if that means things will actually change in the future or not...I'm left feeling skeptical.
