2 questions on phals, loseing dots. Male
Default 2 questions on phals, loseing dots.

1st) I think I have a clue, but want to make sure since I have not seen this before, I am going to cut spikes on 1 of my phals, but before I do I am wondering what this brown thing is, its very hard, I thought a dead bud, but I had dead buds and there not hard like this thing is.

2nd) on this phal, I noticed on a new opening bud, I lost lots of spots and the gained more veins, what can cause that, on that flower is it perhaps the orginal strain kind of coming back?

The brown thing is a dead bud.

In many plants light levels and temperatures contibute to intensity of color and pattern development in flowers. If I were to guess I'd say it needs more light.

Hello Jeffery,

What hybrid is that? It looks similar to my Dtps. Chain Xen Pearl here in my gallery: Sotetsu Album - Orchid Board Galleries

I was told the same as well, that the temperature and light has an affect on the patterns and how they develop in the early bud stage.

Here is a nice photo illustrating that well. http://www.newyorksocialdiary.com/i/...DdtpstaiRF.jpg

All the flowers are on the same clone, yet you can see how much variety there is from the early to the late ones. They look almost like a difference hybrid. I was told the warmer they are the more pink visible, and the cooler they are the more spots that appear. It’s an interesting subject and I’d like to find out more about how this actually works in the flower development.

I hope you get your spots back!

...I like the veins more than the spots, I think...
(Maybe I should move it to the back room to improve the throat's colour, but then I'll never see it )

Are flowers 2 and 3 on the same plant? Variations can occur with flowers on the same plant depending on temperatures / lights as the buds develop and flower blooms.
Among the things judges look for on phals like these is uniformity (in markings, color intensity) between oldest and newest flowers.
BTW, flower 2 is pretty nice ....

Yes!! all flowers are on the same spike, I have 2 spikes on this plant, but spike 2 has no open flowers yet.
The one is the back side of the 3 and also has less dots and more veins.

it's called the lip ...
do you have any id info at all? A nursery or seller's name and a stock number on the label can sometimes narrow down an id

The Orchid came from Gubler Orchids out of Los Angeles, the 1 spike that has no open buds is starting to open 2, it will be interesting to see about the dot situation on it.
