Did I cut a leaf off incorrectly? Female
Default Did I cut a leaf off incorrectly?

Hi guys,

I have two phals that recently had some sunburna nd root rot issues. I have repotted them and trimmed off the dead roots and have been keeping them much drier. However, the oldest leaf on the oldest phal needed to go, it was turning more brown and yellow even after I repotted and trimmed the roots, while the other leaves began to look better. I cut the leaf of with a pair of sterile shears(very tiny). The place where the cut was was basically coderized(placed the shears over a flame so it was hot) and turned hard and straw like, which i thought was good so it wouldnt get infected. I looked at it last night and the area on the crown where i trimmed it has turned yellow with a small purple-ish spot. I was able to get more of the old leaf remnant off, but I'm still worried. Any suggestions?

Pictures will be coming, just in a rush right now to get to school!
Thanks guys

maybe the heat from the scissors burned it....i dont think cutting with hot scissors was a good idea....usually i just rinse my shears in a physan 20 mixture and cut the leaf, it heals up on its own...i hope you havent damaged the crown....gl!

I would usually advise waiting for the leaf to fall naturally. That way the plant can retrieve the last bit of enegy from it and you don't risk damging the plant.

But that doesn't help now. I think pictures would be a help to see what's going on.

I don't think they were too too hot, i just put them over the flame for a second tto sterilize them, and I waited a little bit. :-/ ill send pictures later

I sterilize my scissors with a micro-torch (because I'm so cool I have one laying around ), but I always wait for them to cool before cutting.

Hmm, really not sure.

I certainly think you cut the leaf away too much arround the base. Even if cutting it off I would leave the bit that grows arround the stem (although as said above I would usually not cut it off at all).

But that doesn't look like a point where you have cut. Is that cinnoman sprinkled arround? Did you do that at the time or later after the spot appeared. Cinnoman should help against infection.

Another thought I had was sun-burn. The part under the old leaf is very white because it was covered and did not get any sun light. I wonder if it has burned because it is not used to any light... but that's a wild guess in the dark as I don't really know.
