I use a Brother label maker with plastic film tape and am also a big fan of the #2 pencil. Used Sharpies for a few years and the fading was an issue even under flourescent lights and watering etc.

Definately 2 labels per plant. One tied on (if possible) and 1 buried down the inside of the pot. If you use pencil on the tag that are buried in the pot, I have found that they tend to get smudgy or stained and hard to read.

#2 Pencil does indeed work well and -- as others have mentioned -- are easy to come by. I have also used paint pens which work well too.

Maybe it's these tags, but pencil won't write on them.

So I went with the paint pen and its real bright right now, we'll see. But I sure in heck ain't spending $100 on a label maker. Do you know how many orchids that can buy?

Thanks for the input guys and gals.

I did a comparison once - http://www.firstrays.com/labels.htm - and still think the Brother is the best bet, although I have had good success with laser printed labels, too.

I have a Brother P-Touch (computer connected) available on my store (Miscellaneous section). It's used, but in perfect working order, and only $15, with label tape.

Thumbs up plastic labels--what ink.

Staedlter permanent overhead projector pens are ideal. They are avaiable in
S - Superfine
F - fine
M- medium etc.

S & F are best for small labels.

They are made in Germany and may also be sold as DVD markers for which they are also ideal.

Make sure you get pens marked permanent and not soluble as these will wash off.

Thanks for all the info.

Fading name tags are the pits.

Very fine black paint pens ordered.
