Red face Refreshing mounted Trigonidium obtusum?

hi!
this little orchid has been neglected but it still seems well mounted; the moss has dried out and i would like to know if i should strap on a bit more, maybe closer to the roots? also, any advice for watering would be appreciated! (do i soak the whole thing?)

i am not good at photo posting but i hope this works:

You would soak the whole thing during watering.
If you want to water less then you can add more moss

Hi Rallygirl,

I had this once, potted and it died but maybe at the time I wasn't providing it the right conditions.. I don't know if I would have done better if it had been mounted or not.

Speaking in general, if you have more moss it will stay more wet-moist for longer and take longer to dry out.

It might be ok with the amount of moss on it now or it might dry out too quickly so whether you should add more moss depends on how often you want to water it.

I know some orchids like mounted tolumnias like to be watered and then to dry out I don't know about the Trigonidium though.. I can't remember if I found any relevant information when I had mine when I looked on the internet.. did you find anything at all relevant with a google search?

I don't know if it might like quite high humidity?

As Fren said you can dunk and soak the whole mount or you could spray it everymorning/day or you could do both.

I spray my mounts with fertiliser but only a very very tiny amount of it and usually more often just with some seaweed concentrate and every now and then dunk or soak them.

Good luck with it and please keep us posted

thanks! great advice about the watering. my main concern is that the moss is a couple of inches below the root growth.. the plant is well adhered to the cork but there is no moss near the more promising areas of new growth, so i thought maybe i should put a bit of moss above the old stuff to cover/contact the actual orchid?

Default origins

oh yeah... i forgot to ask:

the old man that i got this from said that he got it himself from the wild (i didn't ask if it was this one or a descendant of the original one) in south africa? he was a very accomplished orchidist in his day but his son has been selling off everything because his father is aging (and probably has dementia, i think). some other stories and information he told me have been consistently correct, but from what i have read this orchid does not grow in south africa?

just curious; i'd rather not tell the story if there is no chance it's true, although if it might be i think it's a pretty good one.

Hi jd and all -
I am coming into this discussion way late, and found it browsing for information...do you still have this plant, and has it flowered?I have one which looks very dissimilar to your photo - medium-sized, flattened p'bulbs with kind of leathery/grassy foliage.
I have had it a few years, and it has grown, but has 'chosen' not to flower. Yet.
Curious as to the state of yours.
Cheers - Nancy
