I was going to say that the nub looks like a spike, and it looks even more like a spike in the latest pictures. I would guess the one on the old spike is a keiki, but I've never had one so can't be certain.

It's really amazing how this one has survived!

Jury is in. That nub on the old spike that looked like the start of a re-spike, was.....

a keiki for sure! No roots yet but given the history here... I'm hopeful.

This hobby is so cool.

That really is amazing! It almost makes you want to try it, but that would be cruel, and could also be foolish.

Update! The keiki grew 2 shiny little leaves and the sat there for a while.

I read on the ob that you can goose along root formation by clumping up some wet sphagnum around the base of the keiki and keeping it wet. I gave it a try.

Nothing happened. Nothing. For a few months. Did the sphagnum clump dry out? Yeah. From time to time. But I faithfully re-wet the sphagnum clump every morning.

Then I gave up about a month or two ago. And now .....

Roots! Two tiny roots are starting to poke out.

Woot!!!

I've been reading this amazing saga, and the suspense is killing me! Did we inspect the roots yet?? Is this Super Phal, or Rootless Desperately Trying To Survive Phal! Either way, it really is remarkable the amount of growth and blooming this plant is able to put out at ONCE!

Believe it or not, the mother phal is still going strong. Healthy roots and blooms well. She's a real fighter!
