Default Repotting Cattleyas

Hi All,
After searching this topic on the board I am still left wondering a few things. Being new to cattleya growing, I am trying to decide weather or not to repot. I have been following Izzie's post regarding this subject as well.

I purchased several cattleya two months ago. The grower told me they like to be underpotted, and therefore would not need repotting for about a year. All in 2.5 inch pots, moss. Reputable grower. Anyway, they all are showing very good new root growth. In addition, they are all showing new leaf growths starting at the base of one or more old growths. My question is this. If the new growth looks like it will grow up/out to be hanging over the edge of the pot, should I repot now before the growth develops? Otherwise I believe that I would be wise to wait for new root growth, likely next spring before repotting (seems like a long time to wait). Is there any harm in letting a new growth develop to hang over the edge of the pot?
Thanks for your input,
Stephen

there is no harm in letting them hang off the side, but i find they are more difficult to repot later...so i think if you have new growth hanging over go ahead and repot...catts tolerate repotting best when they have new growth and new roots happening....just my opinion

I agree with dounoharm, it will be much harder to get the plant out of the pot when the new growth grows. It will not hurt the catt to be repotted now, just be careful with the new growth.

Always glad to see that my incessant questioning can be of service.

Did you see the comment that people have seen that Catts are less prone to rot in clay than in plastic?

Make sure that the roots are actively growing (green tips) otherwise you can set them back for months by repotting at the wrong time. The exception to this is phalaenopsis.
