Default Local orchid club meeting booty!!!

I went to my local orchid club meeting last Thursday
and not only did I win Best Novice and get a ribbon and glass with the club logo embossed on it [it helps when you're the only novice ] but I was naughty and spent $57 on orchids that were at the sale table.

I got a good size, 6-10 leaved flowering Slc Precious Stones x C. Chocolate Drop ($22), 1 Oncidium kaulanii - mounted on a huge bit of treefern and in spike $10.00- and another smaller potted one of the same $5, an Oncidium Mickey Mouse [also on a huge treefern mount and in spike ] $10, and an Odontocidium Autum Tints [$10] which is on a huge mount with a really long flowerspike on it..

In addition to that my mum is also a member there and went to the last meeting and was given a flowering Oncidium flexuosum for free!!

I don't know if they're 'dogs' or not and frankly I don't care!

The flower spikes are so big I had to rearrange my whole hobby GH to get the mounts in [and some will have to moved or removed because there still not enough room for the potential size of the spikes] and now it's bursting at the seams!

The red flower is the Slc- one photo taken without the flash, one with the flash and one in the full on sun.

Thanks All I did was take in my Cochleanthes aromatica 'Magnifica' and fill in card. Someone brought a blooming Dracula cordabae [spelling?] to the meeting which was amazing They won the 'best species' plant category.

...I always wonder how they do it The change in temperature, I would think, would make the flowers wilt, droop, sag, or do anything but look good...

spelling is Dracula cordobae...

Thanks Pat,
the judges at the meeting gave a talk about some criteria and I learned that there is an ideal flower to leaf/bulbs ratio and all the blooms should look their best
at the same time.

My Cochleanthes only had 1 bloom on it, which was really on it's last legs and died the next day and the other bud on the plant chose not to open until after the meeting of course!

Maybe when it gets bigger it might do that

Here's the link to my blog entry I made on it, which has photos of the first bloom:

Cochleanthes aromatica 'Magnifica' | Orchids Online

And here's a link to a photo of the second bloom just after it opened but still in the opening 'out' stage:

One of the judges was saying that you often people with draculas have a spray bottle at shows and every now then give them a mist..

Thanks for the spelling correction

I wish I had a photo, it was gorgeous It was growing in a net basket in sphag-a medium I hate and couldn't get right [too wet = rot] so I took all my Pleuro. alliance out of it... strangely the Cochleathes is in sphag but doing fine .

I'm in a really small rural country town that actually has a population of about 530 people I think [?] but the club covers a much wider area incorporating several towns.

It's so awesome seeing all the fantastically grown, in bloom, orchids at the meetings
