No, American and German roaches are not the same, not by a long shot. In fact, someone posted a site in this thread that shows a picture of 4 (?) different roaches and a bedbug. The American is a big bugger at least and inch long and often bigger. The German is much smaller. You won't find American roaches up north (if I am not mistaken). You will find German roaches everywhere. And as I mentioned before, we have other species here. The one I called a wood roach isn't according to the picture I pulled up on Google. I'll have to ask our County Agent for info.

Thanks for the clarification- someone told me once that the roaches are one of the largest familes of insects. Somewhere I have a photo (not digital) of one called a Blabarous giganteous which is as big as a hand and flies! If I can find it, I'll digitize it.
I'm not sure I'd like the Florida cockroaches; I'll stick with the smaller ones up north.

The palmetto bugs or Florida roaches aren't so bad. They freak most people out because of their size and the fact that they fly(usually right at you). But IMO, they don't bite and don't reproduce like the german roaches so they're ok. Besides, I have dogs and cats so if they do get into the house I figure they have a death wish.

Yeah my westie is like that too. No bug stands a chance with her around........ she is a killing machine. Neither do birds but thats a different and icky story.

I wonder what is the most disgusting bug out there?

Bleah Nibbler! I almost lost my lunch with that one! I'll bet it looked bad enough even before they put it under the microscope!

I looked up Connie Star's Blaberous giganteous. That's one impressive roach! They had one on an episode of the X-Files once.

Yet another reason I'm glad I live where the winters are cold!

War of the Coprophages. Season 3. That was the episode where this town is infested with cockroaches and they appear to be killing people. A huge crap factory blows up in the end. It was a really funny episode if I remember rightly. The Blaberus giganteous appears at the very end when Mulder is typing out his report and eating a snack. He looks over at his plate and there is this huge cockroach sitting on it. He contemplated it for a minute before crushing it with an X-file.

I remember his squashing it alright but the rest of it is foggy. Its been a while since i have seen them.
Great show.

I would like to mark the passing of my African Violet. Today she was officially dead. I have her nearly 6 years and unfortunately the cold weather got her when i was away (at least that was what I was thinking) She was a massive healthy plant until Christmas.

I am actually quite sad.

Yeah, that was a great show!

Sorry to hear about your African Violet. I lost one of those myself this year. It got...wait for it...root rot! Shocking I know. I repotted it into a pot that was too large for it. Won't do that again.

Oooh interesting. I repotted the plant (It hadnt been repotted in 6 years) and it was in to a far larger container. Didnt add much soil........... I dont think. I will have to dig it up and check the roots. The plant broke off in my hand and I just put it in the bin. The leaves were dying off bit by bit. Very few left. On the up side my seeds are growing at a mental rate and the sweet pea are nearly up past the TV.
You win some you lose some. I was awfully fond of that plant. I think I need another Orchid to cheer myself up.
