The packing peanuts in the bottom is solid advice. Use the white or green ones, the other colors are treated with anti-static chemicals.

The watering advice is also good- you want to flush the medium every time you water. Trdyl is right, bark does not absorb water quickly. A good way to water is to allow the pot to soak in water for a few minutes- like in a clean bucket. Then flush with water to get any fertilizer buildup out.

Try to find a fertilizer that does not have Urea based Nitrogen. It should say what kind under the ingredients. Look for ammoniacal or nitrate based.

Ray Barkalow has a good guide for what to look for in fertilizers here: Fertilizers & Plant Nutrition

I'll add my , since you're using a clear pot, and can see the roots--water when the roots are silvery and leave them alone when they're green.

Thank you for all the good advice! I figured out my orchid w/blooms (a gift) is a Phal & in a very small pot w/out a drain hole. Its air roots looked dried so I watered it heavily & assumed it needed repotting to avoid root rot.

Thanks to you wonderful people, I discovered it was actually in a clear pot squeezed tight inside a plastic pot, but was sitting in putrid water. Now I see roots that are green so I flushed it & placed the plastic pot inside a larger clay pot. It can now wait to be repotted. THANK YOU!!
