Default how long does it take for potting media to degrade?

So, if I am using bark chips, how long would those be good for from the time i potted it to the time i needed to repot? Just a rough estimate, months? a year? I have currently been using miracle grow orchid potting mix (which I know i need to change, but am having a hard time finding bark mix at my local nurseries).

Also, do you guys recommend mizes that already have fertilizer in them like something from Miracle grow? Or is just using unfertiziled media and then fertilizing "weakly weekly" really the best option?

This really depends on what your conditions are like ,Quality of bark, how much you feed, how well the plant is growing .
However i find with a bark mix every 2 years i pot on /repot.
I am trying Coconut husk only which they say can last 3-4 years but would imagine if the plant is growing well should have out grown the pot !Hopefully so will need potting on anyway .

The general advice for bark is 2 years but as Masdyman says it can depend on several things. You want to keep an eye on how broken down it is and judge by that.

Got some good answers here.

You might check some bigger garden centers near you and see if you can get media by the scoop. That's how I get my CHC and charcoal.

Inert media like LECA and volcanic rock last almost forever.

Coconut Husk Chips (CHC) last longer than bark.
And Orchiata bark lasts longer than fir bark.

Good advice here! If you cannot find the bark you want at a local garden center, check out my Ebay store: eBay Store - incredibleorchids: Species, Incredible Bargains, Dendrobium
Look under orchid supplies. Good luck!
