Is this the initiation of a flower, NOID better pictures
Hi all,
This plant was a gift for me from my wife's family in the Dominican Republic. I imagine its an Agraecoid orchid of some sort. I looked at it today and saw a growth that looked distinct from normal leaf growths. Is this flower initiation, or is it keiki or a new leaf?
I've basically just kept it alive and ignored it believing there was no way I could ever make this happy enough to flower.
What do you guys think?

That sure looks like a Brassavola nodosa! Is that new growth coming out of the pseudobulb or the leaf?

I think Tim's got it properly pegged as B. nodosa. Possibly could be subulifolia/cordata but it looks a little small for that species. That growth is a new lead, which if you're lucky may give you some flowers in the next few months. In my experience these do best either mounted or else in baskets or clay pots with 'chunky' media so the roots dry off quickly, but YMMV and yours certainly looks happy!

My first thought also was that this is a Brassavola.

Not an Angraecoid. Angraecoids are vandaeceous. Also wrong part of the world. Angraecoids are native to Africa and Madagascar.
This clearly has sympodial growth patterns.
Could be a Brassavola sp. The fact that they're from the Dominican Republic is consistent with New World orchids such as Brassavola.
If it's a Brassavola, the flower spikes don't emerge from the rhizome.

Hey guys,
Thanks!!! Wow, took me by surprise. you know, shame on me I never bothered to look at the growth pattern. I just went by the shape of the leaves.
It didnt really matter to me that it came from DR because its not from the wild, only from another orchid collector. In that case it didn't have to be native to the Americas.
I guess Im actually kinda dissapointed its a Brassavola. They never did interest me.
Thanks again all!!!
PS I updated the images, made them easier to see.

Darn! If only you were a little closer I would take that "uninteresting" orchid of your hands for you! But seriously, I also thought these weren't all that great until mine sent up about 10 flowers all at once! Made me change my mind pretty quick!

Hehe, well my wife would kill me if I gave this one away or sold it or traded it. It came from one of her family members so its here to stay. Maybe I will come around. hehe
