I'm thinking the same thing. I have a hard time trusting the quality of the material in pet brands- just haven't made a good name for themselves with all the junk you can find in them.

I will test it on some of the chids I have duplicates of and let you know how it works. There are some brands out there I also would not trust (I used to own a pet shop so I know there are a few giving the industry a bad name). I haven't personally had any problems with ExoTerra but I'm sure they aren't without customer complaints. Also I think the chunks might be on the small side so they might not work to well on larger orchids. But I'll still give it a whirl and post my results.

Thanks for your understanding- I'll be interested to see what happens!
Aren't CHC good for growers prone to overwatering? (I live in a dry environment too, so go figure)
I'm thinking of mixing some with a little perlite and charcoal for my phals.

I'm not sure, I was thinking it holds water pretty good for reptiles but not sure about plants since the roots will be drawing water out of it. I am actually going to use a phal as my test plant so I will be sure to let you know how that works but I will be using just the CHC without adding anything.

Wouldn't want to loose an expensive orchid!

I wouldn't even bother testing it. Just treat it like you would treat any other coconut product and you should be fine.

Sorry about the confusion. I meant I will test (experiment with) one of my "extra" orchids in the pet grade CHC without doing anything extra to it just to see if it's safe. I will add just enough water to make it moist but not enough to rinse it. I think this will tell me if there is anything harmful in it.

wow, PetsMart! I wouldn't think of it. You all have so many good ideas. I'll see if I can find some and test it too. I'd buy some cheap orchids from our local flea market here and test on them. These orchids are about $5 - $25.
I'll look around on the net too (from the sites you suggested).
Thanks all.

So who wants free CHC?
Come to my house and you can have all you want.
Since this cold winter, I have branches, coconuts, all over the place falling off my coconut trees. My neighbors coconut completely died and I'm cutting it down this weekend.
So, just what part of the coconut tree is this husk from?

The pericarp is what its from, I do believe.
Ive got a bunch, 3 cubic foot compressed cubes of large size 3-6 cm. Anyone in Northern California is welcome to purchase them.
