Really stupid question about sphag N bag
Default Really stupid question about sphag N bag

Hi guys,

My name is Shelly, im new to the forums!

I have two questions about sphag n bag

1)I am trying to save a phalaenopsis wiht no roots using the sphag n bag technique. I heard superthrive is really good for this technique. I have a really stupid question though - I think I already know the answer but I need to be sure. After adding some superthrive to water, do you need to soak only the bottom part of the plant where the roots will grow for an hour? Not the entire plant, just the bottom right?

2)Right now I have had my plant sphag n bagged for about a week. There are three leaves left. I am noticing that the middle leaf is starting to turn yellow starting in the middle of the leaf, toward the base of the leaf. Why is this happening and how can I stop it?

It sounds like crown rot to me. Did you happen to leave water in the crown of the phalaenopsis over night?

Hi there! No not really, I havent been watering it since the sphag and bag and the plant has not been in contact with the sphagnum moss.

I soaked the entire plant in super thrive solution before I bagged. :X I could have been terribly wrong though. Hopefully Ray chimes in.

Ah, here we go. Quoting from Ray's site:
" 1. Fill a container with water at about 80°F (~27°C)

2. Add about a teaspoon of hormone concentrate per gallon of water (~1.25 ml/L)

3. Totally immerse the plant for about an hour."

THanks for all the replies! Yes Izzie, I tried this last night. I soaked the entire thing in superthrive for an hour, dried it off completely. Instead of using a plastic bag I am using a see through plastic cake dish. Instead of using sphag I put a small container filled with water inside the dish with the plant. I think my plant is trying to grow roots but not getting enough moisture which is why the leaves are turning yellow.

Ill keep my fingers crossed....
