New Den Hiroshi Tokunaga with yellowing leaves
Default New Den Hiroshi Tokunaga with yellowing leaves

Hello everyone,

I'm still fairly new to the wonderful world of orchids and have recently increased my collection from 2 (phal and vanda) to 11 (added 3 cattleyas, 1 dendrobium, 2 potinaras, 2 howeara, and 1 phal). My problem is with the Debdrobium. It is a Den Hiroshi Tokunaga. I received it bare root on Thursday and immediately potted it in sphangum moss. I went back last night and repotted in orchid bark because after more research, it believe I incorrectly potted it in the beginning, especially since the leaves on two of the pseudobulbs(?) began yellowing- both the oldest and youngest. I'm hoping the yellowing is due to shock of being potted and repotted. This morning, I noticed some yellowing of the leaves on the middle bulb and there is also black hair-like fuzz covering the stems and backs of the leaves (more so on the stems). It is entirely possible that the fuzz was already on the plant when it came in and I didn't notice it until I began inspecting the plant closer because of the yellowing. Not being familiar with this particular type of orchid, is the fuzz part of the plant or do I have a pest/fungus/etc I need to take care of? I immediately removed my "sick" plant from the others in fear of spreading something. Any suggestions? I will attempt to post pictures later this evening if at all possible.

Thanks

Default Pictures of Den

I am attaching photos of my Den. Further research has informed me the black hairs are normal for some species, so I'm guessing this is one of them. I'm still really concerned about the yellowing though. Any help is greatly appreciated as I really want this plant to survive.

Most dendrobiums do this as the cane becomes hardened off. Its not a bad thing. it means your cane has grown to blooming size. Those look like spikes to me on the picture on the right.I would research what species were used in the cross to see if they get a winter rest or not.

This plant is a mericlone and is a cross between Dawn Maree (D. formosam x D. cruentum) x infundibulum. I'm having trouble finding if it requires a winter rest though. I'm probably not putting in a clear enough inquiry as I keep finding photo pages but no clear information. I did find a photo of a Dawn Maree, which had lost most of it's leaves and was in bloom. I'm going to keep looking and hope for the best. If I murder this one, it wouldn't have been the first and probably won't be the last. You live and you learn. Thanks for the help. Love this site and all of the great replys I have read on other threads.
