Hi. I received two orchids a year ago and unfortunately do not know what kind they are. The flowers died rather quickly and I have had limited luck in having them re-flower. But both now have many of what appear to be rather long thick white things (roots?) coming out from near the bottom of the plant and extending out into the air. Does anyone know what this is, and what I should do? The plants are in the original containers from the orchid nursery and they have not really grown. Thanks.
sounds like aerial roots, and assuming such you have likely got phalaenopsis orchids.....that is normal for them....post a picture if you can so that we can check on the condition of the plants and advise you accordingly....gl
This is very common in the phalaenopsis species of orchids. If your roots are healthy and growing, the tips will be white. also the aeriel roots will look different from the roots in the medium. The aerial roots will have a skin like covering to alow the roots to obtain water from the air, the roots under the medium will be fleshy and green. Hope this helps!
