I don't mind mislabeling, specially if they put a $10 Phal Orchid price tag on some rare expensive gem

That is Epidendrum Radicans x Sophronitis Coccinea A primary hybrid made in the 1800's Its been named Epiphronitis Veitchii - That is still a younge plant wait until it grows into a specimen plant with 10 or more spikes ,it will knock your socks off!! Mine had 8 spikes this year see www.flickr.com/photos/ronaldhanko/3248844199/ - Cached

So now that I know what it is, I have a 2 questions about it, 1) after this plant goes out of bloom, what do you do with the spike? I noticed its different than the Phals its comes straight out the top of the plant and 2)how do we care for this one?

For what it's worth, Jeff, these tags have a numbering system used by Carmela's Orchids in Hawaii T4605 and T4539 don't seem to be available now as individual plants but are available as compots.

The plant in this thread is definitely not Epiphronitis Veitchii. The flowers are similar but this plant is far too rigid and robust. It is a reed stem Epidendrum type, probably a hybrid, and it is unlikely you will make a more precise identification without information from the grower.

A "compot" is a collection of the same plant in one pot. It is the stage somewhere before the grower divides up the plants that have been transferred from flasks. Once they are removed from the flask they are gown in "community" pots or "plug trays" and moved up the ladder until they are large enough to grow in single pots and be sold to the retail market. So if you purchase a compot, you'll get anywhere from 10 to 25 small plants, all the same. Carmela's ( Orchid Growers - Hakalau, HI - Carmela Orchids) is one of many growers in Hawaii that sells plug trays and compots to the general public. I have had very positive purchasing experience with this vendor, especially if you get in on one of their sales!!!!! I purchased 10 4" Cattleya for $8.00 each and free S/H. They are by no means the only reliable vendor in Hawaii. I say this because my experience is limited at best.
