I went to an orchid greenhouse yesterday and forgot to check the name on something that caught my eye, I thought if I describe it, you guys could tell me what it was...
It was in a 4" pot, all that was in it was a fat spike about 2-4" high and about 1-1.5" diameter, came to a point, some of them had a few thin shoots coming out the sides with what I think is going to be a flower but none were in flower....
what are they?

Sounds a lot like a catasetum or cycnoches. From the way you described it, I'm guessing it was still dormant or recently shed its leaves.
