Bud blast..Potinara Red Crab
Hi again,
I have another question. When I lost my two new buds (within 2-3 days after purchasing it), turned black and eventually scrivelled up and dropped off... I was wondering if I should cut the black stem from the bud right back to where it came out of the leaf? or just leave it alone?
Thanks

What sort of orchid is it? A Phalaenopsis type? I would usually just leave the spike till it turns brown.

Sorry for the loss.
I believe it is a cattleya type. I think it is safe to cute it off because their spikes don't usually continue to make more buds.

Bud blast/ to cut or not to cut
Thanks to all of you who replied to my bud blast question. I'm pretty sure it is in the cattleya family. It is totally black, so I will cut it off now. Thanks again for your help!

I believe these guys have new growths that mature quite fast right?
You may get new buds on new mature growths

I hope so. I have 3 new roots starting now (way above the bark level) as well as what looks like a new bud with a pointy thingey coming out new the bottom of a stem...
Now I know I haven't killed it!

Good its growing well then
These small red cattleya types can bloom more than one a year for people because they the new growths are smaller than those huge cattleyas

OH! that's interesting. I didn't know I had a small version....LOL.....I purchased it only because I love deep red flowers! I searched and searched at the orchid show until I finally found a nice deep one with deep red buds (of course didn't know they would blast off)..LOL...
I really hope it blooms for me.. I have never had an orchid that has bloomed yet, so I'm patiently waiting!

Probably, the buds blusted because of the stress due to travelling. It is a very common problem. Good luck with the new buds!
