Red Dendrobium Thailand
Default Red Dendrobium Thailand

Hello All!
Whilst on holiday in Thailand February last year I bought some flasked orchid seedlings. They were labelled as Red Dendrobium. I didn't realise there are different species of Dendrobium so am now unsure how best to look after them. By the tiny picture on the bottle they look like the flower that is frequently used to decorate food in restaurants there (which is why I chose them as a memory) Anyone know what they are? I would say they are more pinkish and white than red but obviously wont know for sure until they flower.

I managed to deflask them successfully a couple of months ago - well they are still alive and they are now in a propagator. I have been spraying them every week-ish as I am afraid of overwatering.

Any advice would be much aprieciated. Thanks,
Charlotte

Hi Charlotte and welcome to orchid board.

A description of just 'Red Dendrobium' will be very difficult to tell which type it is. It is very likely a hybrid of multiple species but there are so many of these and many do not have registered names.

Dendrobium species and hybrids are grouped into different types and working out which type it fits in to will help a lot with how it should be cared for.

Do you have any pictures? Pictures of the plant, even without flowers, can help to be able to tell which type it is. If you need help posting pics take a look here.

If they are very young plants it may be more difficult to tell but it's worth a try, hopefully the experts here will have some clue from pictures.

Default Photo of young Dendrobium plants

Thanks Rosie,
Here's a picture (hopefully if I've done it right)- the two largest ones have kind of fallen over hence I think I should pot them up! I have three more that are much smaller and upright.

I see you are in the midlands, me too!

Default Another pic

I think this might be the one - just had a look thorugh my holiday snaps. Apologies to the people in the background!
If it is that one I hadn't realised it would get so big! I guess It will be OK in a small pot for quite a while though. Would quite like to have a go at mounting on bark as well if it's suitable
