The size of the pot depends on the size of the root mass. You need a pot where the roots will fit comfortably, no bigger. I know what you mean about top heavy Dens tipping over! What you can do is place the smaller pot into a larger clay pot to stabilize it.

A comfortable fit doesn't mean that you jam it into a tiny pot with hardly any medium! It just means that you don't have a ton of free space. There is still plenty of room for lots of new roots. Usually 'room to grow' is often in reference to the above ground parts. Normally repotting is done every 1-2 years or so depending on the medium, so you would need to leave space for the new canes that would come up during that time.

Yeah you could repot it in a half the size clay pot. you could put some rocks on the bottom and or put teh smaller pot in the current pot and fill the gap with small rocks or gravel or bark
