So these are dens "rescued" from Lowe's clearance rack. They were potted together and both looked healthy. The yellowed one was placed about 8in closer to the east facing window than the other. What's wrong with it? Did I burn it? Both have received the exact same culture, bark mix and misting.

1. It's got no viable roots.

2. It looks like the leaves are falling off because they're old.

Again, just the same old problem with the Phals. Gotta get stuff from a better source.

Keep growing it. You might be surprised. It's still alive, at least.

Well, even though it doesn't bode well for the plant, thanks for the response!

Poor Den lost all it's leaves. I won't give up on it, though! It's "brother" is doing fine, though, or so it seems.

Good point. I bought a dendrobie a couple of months ago and it proceeded to drop all its leaves, looked like a green stick protruding from bark. I held onto it thinking the cane still contained plenty of nutrients and sure enough, last week four or five little green buds emerged from the nodes higher up the cane. Doing a little research, it turns out they might be keikis. Would be great to get a few new babies from one sick, clearance rack orchid..

your medium is decaying. bad stuffs better change your orchid medium... and... Be sure to it tight... orchids wont grow new roots if the base wiggles... well i dont know for others... but if your dens has some problem i usually put them on a dryer side... if its not improving you can go back to your store and buy a new one... for the yellowing one... well if you really want to revive... which this is a 50/50 chance i would give it a rest... air dry for a week and then a new medium... once a week of water... who knows it might spur a new baby from the base... if its from the cane it would take kazillion years to get it to flower!

I had this exact same experience from a Lowe's rescue den.

Eventually I just cut all the dead root stubs off and put the dens in water, as a last resort. Now they've started growing roots! They are hanging in the cup of water with just the bottoms of the plants in the water.

The den that is suffering is overpotted. The pot is much too big for the pant. Too much medium equals too wet. Dens especially like to have very tight shoes. You will need to repot in a pot much smaller, and you may need to use a heavier pot (like clay) as a sleeve to keep it from falling over.

Also, check that you didn't bury the rhyzome too deeply. It can suffocate. They like to sit half in, half out of the medium.

Thanks for the info JB, Sticky and Frosted. I have a couple of Dens I got from HD in the same condition and am grateful to know I may get them to do something. I'm gonna try the suggestions on them.

You guys rock!!!
