Default Help with orchide ID and general care info

Hi Everyone,
I have a few orchids that i would realy like to know if they are doing alright. i am currently searching the web for the orchids ID to know a little more about them and how to care for them. i have attached some pictures for everyone to see if they can help me

img 45 and 47 are my Oncidium Orchids - butterfly orchid, they were rescued from my parents, they were wrinkled and only had 2 roots rest were all gone. had it for just under a year and a new buld has grown and also that bulb has now flowered. i was shocked i was looking after it like i do for my phalaenopsis

img 48 and 50 i belive it may be a Dendrobium Nobile - Dendrobium Spring Dream 'Apollon' hope anyone can confirm. i think they need a rest during winter. i had it for over a year now i going to try giving it a rest this time. last year i had plenty of keikes after flowering (i brought it with flower already)

img 51 -52 i really need help on this one. i think is a Dendrobium Hard Cane variaty but i can really find any real information on how to care for it

img 53 - 55 are my Cymbidiums they were also rescued from my mother. it was originally a big plant but only managed to save 2 bulbs, not even a single root was saved. i planted the bulbs in deferent pots and water to a point were it was never very moist. i not sure if that what had to be done. i just used comon sense, i thought if always wet bulb is going to rot. it ended up paying off. both grew a new buld, one is more developed then the other and now they new bulbs are also starting to develope another set.

img 56-57 all i know is that its a Phalaenopsis, wife brought this just the other month still on original pot and medium

img 58-61 are another Phalaenopsis, i have these now for over a year. Its the second time i managed to make it bloom.

all these orchids have been repotted last april apart from the recent one that my wife brought. i think they are in OK pot size. i have used a already mixed medium for orchids. it doesn't state on the bag if its for a specific variaty. i now after learning a bit more i think for the Phalaenopsis it may need something more open.

let me know what u think.

There're a ridiculously large amount of posted information on Phalaenopsis here on the OB. Most of the questions regard this particular genus. There is a search engine on this site. Or you can peruse the Beginner's Section at your leisure.

Hi Carlos,
the Oncidium could be Oncidium Sweet Sugar but there are several hybrids on the market that look a like. You can't be sure which one it is without help from the breeder.

The Dendrobium with the white flowers probably is a Yamamoto hybrid. If you google for their website you'll find a great care sheet for these. I have the same one as yours I think. Jerry (forum member) encouraged me to water it even in the fall/winter when it started to lose leafs on the newer growths. The leaf loss stopped and all I got were flowers (about to open), no keiki's.

The pink flowering Dendrobium could be Dendrobium Berry Oda. Dendrobium Berry Oda = Dendrobium kingianum x Dendrobium 'Mini Pearl' (=Dendrobium canaliculatum x Dendrobium bigibbum). This is not a hard cane Den. It requires a temperature drop in the fall to about 10 C (grow it outside) to induce blooming. When it gets colder keep it a bit drier but when the buds develop start watering normally again, otherwise you might get bud drop, as I learned the hard way :-)
If it's Dendrobium Berry Oda, this one is prone to growing keiki's.

PS take Den. Berry Oda indoors again when temperatures get lower as 7 C... not sure if it can take much lower.

Nicole

BTW, the Berry Oda does great in a terra cotta pot for me. You might want to try that when you repot the next time.

You saved me hours of google searching. thank you Blueszz. i had looked for ages and could never find anything similar to what i had. I think you nailed it down 100% it looks exactly like a Dendrobium Berry Oda and it does have a honey scent when its in bloom, exactly like the discription for this orchid. i cant put this flower outside as i dont have a garden. i put mine next to the window. it's a old fashion windows where it slides up and down to open and its not very good in keeping the cold out. i guess it give it enough of a drop as it has bloomed again this year. when i took the picture most of the flowers have droped off, it flowered about 2 weeks ago.

quick question, do all Phalaenopsis have the same requirement across the board. sorry if this is a stupid question

No. Not a stupid question at all. In fact, a very good one.

The answer is truthfully, no, they don't all grow the same way.

Phalaenopsis hybrids do. Only because they've been bred to be somewhat homogenized in cultural requirements - domesticated if you will.

Phalaenopsis species most certainly do not all grow in the same manner from species to species. However, there are certain aspects of culture that are consistent throughout the genus.

Here's a brief run down:

There are the more commonly known "evergreen Phals".

Then there are the deciduous Phals.

And the above are just generalizations within the genus.

Luckily, the variation of cultural requirements within the genus is not as confounding as a large genus such as Dendrobium.
