Miracle grow is not for epiphite plants. it is basically african violet soil with very few chunks of bark in it.
better gro is better than miracle grow.
i prefer clay pots because the medium dries more evenly and they look better.
I would consider coconut chips that i just started using.
they last way longer than bark and I think they might be more resistant to mold and fungus. also coco chips absorb water fast but dry faster than bark.
you can buy a compressed brick that expands in a gallon of water.
Also no trees are cut to provide coco chips.
The dendrobium that was potted in coconut husk of the ones I bought as a closeout for a dollar doubled the size and grew way more vigorously than those potted in bark.
Thank you all, I have learned so much in such a short period. More questions are sure to come. I'm going out in about an hour to get this task underway. Pray for me (better yet, my orchid) :-) I will follow up and post pictures.

do you have an update? i saw from your first photos that you had the Miracle Gro orchid mix. it says "orchid mix", but it's horrible! i know......
theres nothing wrong with those yellow roots as long as they are still hard and not mushy, i thought i also seen a new plant starting on the first picture or is it a spike?
