So, the first orchid I bought as a seedling is coming into bloom. Literally overnight, the lower leaf bracts extending about an inch up onto the leaves turned dark brown with sticky brown exudate. I assumed I had let water get between the leaf bracts from a plant above it on the rack, so I sprayed with phyton and put it right in front of the fan. Today, the leaves started flopping to the side, so I assumed the roots must be involved. I unpotted the plant and found that the brown infection all visibly lead to one root. The root was soft and black, So I removed it by hand.

Now, this is the part I've never seen or heard of: The root was oozing pus (I mean purulent, thick, creamy yellow pus) when I pulled it off the plant. The root juncture with the plant was visibly swollen and oozed pus, when squeezed. I Had no idea where to go from here, so I soaked the plant in phyton for a few minutes and repotted it in clean medium, isolated from my other plants.

Has anyone heard of, or seen this before?? I'm sorry I didn't take pictures, but it was really quite disgusting to me. I've cared for patients with some pretty intense wound infections before, but there's something unsettling about a purulent plant infection that I am not ok with

Sounds like it could be Erwinia rot, a gram negative bacterial infection. The prognosis is not good. Cut away all infected tissue, but it sounds like that might be the whole plant at this point. Sanitize everything. Good luck.

So is it likely that my other plants will become infected? I'm going to throw out the plant and pot in question. I have a bad habit of using a basin filled with water and water my plants community style. Is this going to spell the end for the rest of the plants that have come into contact with the water?

As I said, sanitize everything. Also keep plants from touching till you're sure it is under control. Use your Phyton as a spray. Don't let moisture sit on the leaves, etc.
