Doug,
I forgot to mention that there are two places I'm familar with that actually sell self-contained hydroponic pots with a water gauge specifically for orchids.
I prefer using these pots because it is easier to keep track of when an orchid needs to be watered. What I really find helpful though is you can actually fill the container higher on occassion using the water gauge as a measure when you are going on vacation, out of town etc. This prevents having to worry whether your orchids are receiving enough water while you are away.
I purchase these pots at either hydro-orchids.com
Home or interiorwatergardens.com. However, it is Ray's site and forum that I refer to when I have a question about growing in S/H because of the amount of information he provides there.
If you have a question about S/H that you need a quick answer to, feel free to send me an e-mail. I'll be happy to help you if I can. If not, there's always Ray's S/H forum.
You are definitely on the right track. Once you get used to growing in S/H, you will love it. Happy Growing and have a Great Vacation!!!
