Orchid Database???
Hi,
I have 10 orchids now and am a newbie . I figure before I get too many more I should get a database program that will help me out in keeping track of what I have, what I need to do for them, and what I want to get. .
What do you use and any suggestions would be appreciated. I've seen many different kinds but before investigating too much money I was hoping to pick some brains.
Thanks, Karen

I started with an MS Excel spreadsheet and have since moved on to OrchidWiz. It is the best, all in one, most beautiful to look at, lots of pictures, culture info, journal for your own collection, research plant ancestry, check award data - computer program going. Whew!

I've looked at OrchidWiz and would LOVE it but unless I come into a large sum of $$$$$ I think at this point I'd rather spend on more orchids and maybe a terrarium for MORE orchids.
Thanks for your input. It's on the future list.

I agree with Dave that OrchidWiz is the best program out there. The only other one I know of is Cattleya-Log, which I believe is cheaper. I used to have the trial version, which only lets you have like 10 entries, but at least you can see what it's like.

I've started using Excel as a simple tool to keep track of them. I would love to get OrchidWiz but can't afford it just now.

If it's any help in the $$$$$ situation, as an OB member you get a 20% or 30% discount... anyway, I think the deal is still on and this makes the software a little more affordable and if you get the quarterly updates when you purchase, there is a savings there, too. But maybe send a PM to Marty or Susie Q (cb977) 'cause they'd know for sure.

Hi Country Gramma,
I researched this, went thru a bunch of posts, came up with a list or what I wanted to keep track of, made an excel type list but I just print it out and keep track with pen/pencil. I'll send you my email address by private message and if you're interested, I can e-send you what I've dong.

I know that there is a permanent discount for OB members, but I don't know of how much. We had a special 33% off offer once, but that was only for a month. I think it must be 20% or something similar now.

Since I'm lucky enough to know how to write my own I keep all my data on my website. It's database driven and if I decide I need something else I just write it into the design. Most of the data is not available to the public but the pictures are. My entire collection is in there.

Thanks Everyone,
I downloaded the Cattleya Log one and have 10 plants in it - it seems to be OK. I'm gonna look at what Connie's doing and then I'll decide if I want to buy the key for Cattleya Log.
Thanks again, Karen
