Oops...I have two small plants of the same variety and neither one has shown any sign of dropping it's leaves and in fact, seems to be growing a little bit. I'm not sure whether these need a rest period, but as I said in a previous post, I'm letting my plants guide me in their care. How do the Psuedobulbs look?

Keith, I had a Howeara Mini-Primi years ago. This orchid is not deciduous. It sounds like your plant has passed away.

Hi

Yes, David, sorry for delay have been on holiday. the buds are continuing to grow despite my barbarous attack on the old roots and a transfer into growing in Hydroleca - which I think may just be the plant trying to make seeds and get away from this horrible place - flowering as a last ditch attempt to survive......

Will let you know how it goes but daylight hours are so pathetic here at the moment I'm seeing a real slowdown in everything.

Nobiles like tight pots and bloom better with cramped roots. They do their resting and blooming in cold, dry, sunny conditions. If you do water, either mist the plant or give the plant baby sips until after blooming is finished. In April the plant will want to start growing again, and that's the time to water and fertilize regularly and well and always low nitrogen. Nobiles often hold on to their leaves for two years or even longer. And nobiles can bloom on old canes, so never cut one off unless it's really bad.

And congratulations on those buds. Nice growing!

It looks like you are getting buds alright. My experience is that Nobile type dendrobiums tend to initiate buds due to cool temperatures. Many people with hold water but I continue to water mine as long as the plant has leaves. It is not wise to generalize about hybrids because each species in its makeup will influence the way the plant responds to growing conditions. It takes time and patience to research natural habitat of each species in the hybrid but a good grower will do it.
