Hello...the medium is called hydroton. It's clay drops that get super heated and expand as these little clay balls. Because it is clay it lasts for a long time and is used in growing plants hydroponically. And it just happens to do really well for growing orchids. For me the biggest plus is that its inorganic....which means it doesn't decompose and no bugs!!!!! Let me know if you have any questions.
