I like the aquarium idea. If they are watered the day before then put in a covered aquarium the day that you go. There should be enough moisture in the medium to hold them. I would discourage any addition water in the aquarium if Bahrain is as humid as it is here in Qatar. If you have it a fungicide treatment before you leave will not hurt.

even if you could not cover the aquarium, it should be fine. Could spray with Physan-20 if available according to instructions on bottle.

Stefano,
I've been using Physan 20 for years.

Was wondering if H2O2 would work as it is more readily available and also cheaper...

Hydrogen Peroxide is a great disinfectant. I have used it to sterilize orchid seed. Physan 20 is actually cheaper than the peroxide. Plus it kills algae which is great for me since I grow in S/H.

no need to either dilute or wash off. The bubbling you see is the H2O2 going to H2O and O2 (water and oxygen). H2O2 is an oxidizer in stronger concentrations and can inhibit wound (human) healing if used too often and persistently but for our orchid use I wouldn't be concerned.

Hi Ted
Bahrain is humid mornings & evenings but I find the indoor humidity only around 20%, presumably because of the A/C.
If I go for the aquarium set up and just give a thorough watering before I leave should I then keep the lid shut or leave it open a little to allow some airflow?
As I have 4 plants perhaps I should try a different method with each and see which fares the best!

Phalaenopsis are very forgiving i have quite a few in my collection and when a trip comes into the equation I would do a thorough soaking two days prior than the day of departure and fill the humidity trays keeping them close to each other to retain a humid level. They should be fine and it also would not hurt if you have a pot or two of water within close proximity to them as well. As suggested a/c to about 80 degrees is a winner as well.
