Or another method is to use a tray and fill it up with pumice or lava rock (preferably the layer of pumice or lava rock should be 1 or more inches thick) and fill the tray with water up to the top level of the pumice, then place the Phal on top.

Perhaps semi-hydroponics is another way as well. As the above mentioned method is pretty much the same premise.

I've tried sphag and bag, there are a few problems I've found with this method.

1. It's difficult to punch enough holes into the bag to provide proper air circulation and keep high enough humidity levels. There are baggies that are breathable, but I didn't bother looking for them because we hardly have a use for them here in our house.

2. The environment inside the bag is perfect for growing fungi.

3. Odds of it working out for you is low because of the above two reasons.

I 'spose that's sort of what I have going on now, just without the substraight. I'm very interested in s/h so perhaps this is an ideal situation to give it a shot... time to find some clay pellets I think.
