what is this?
Hi eveyone,
This is my sickest-looking Phal. I was doing my "daily orchid inspection" a few minutes ago and noticed something growing from it that I that I'm unsure of. Is there a chance that it's a spike on such an unhappy-seeming plant? Maybe a keiki? I would appreciate your thoughts.
Vicki

Hard to make out but I would bet on a keiki. I have a Phal that looks about the same, also my sickest, and it has just started to put out a keiki.

Hi Ted,
I got excited...I know I'm too eager. As you say "time will tell". I've just got to work on patience.
Thank you for replying!

Hi,
As I told Ted, I just got excited. If it's a keiki, I hope Mom hangs on at least long enough for her baby to be ready to leave the nest.
Thanks for your reply!
Vicki

I'd bet it's a keiki too. I had a phal that had good roots but dropped every leaf but one. I kept caring for it and it eventually produced a healthy basal keiki. I'm not going to separate it from the mother leaf. If it's happy I leave well enough alone.

It looks like a basal Keiki to me as well. You really can't separate basal Keikis. They are part of the main plant, not an independent plantlet.
