I was just given a bunch of keiki's from a nice old man selling cymbidiums. He kept on calling these "poor man's orchids" Does anyone have an idea what they are?
These sure look like reed stem epidendrums orchids to me. I grow them right in the garden in a sunny spot, my soil is well drained. I'm not sure where you are but if you get below freeezing in the winter plant them in a pot and bring in over winter then back out in the spring.
Based on the fact that he gave you keikis, this is not the Bauhinia Variegata which is known as Poor Man’s Orchid in some places so, I agree with Baz that it is one of the Epidendrum Orchids.
Let's not get hung up too much on the term "poor man's orchid" and what we each "know" goes by that name. It's simply a common name applied to many plants, orchids and otherwise.
I would agree with all of the above, but I think it is most likely a reed-stem Epidendrum and not a Dendrobium.
And just fyi, the link you posted worked, Dail (both times ).
