Mounted on a tree, does that count? I don't know if its happier, but I am. I don't do anything special except water it everyday like the others.

I am a phal killer - I recently mounted a couple that didn't look bad but when i unpotted them one had rotted roots, the other just not good looking roots. Both started growing roots within a week of being mounted. I tend to go light on the moss on mounts - can always add more if neccessary - with the warm dry days we have in summer I water WELL (shower the entire mount under faucet) every day - when we had especially hot and dry (temps around 100 humidity in the teens) I watered a second time in late afternoon with a sprayer

both pix were taken shortly after plants were mounted - both have grown some in the short time since.

pix from today

Some people obviously grow phals well in pots - I am not one of them lol
I do have a potted stuartiana that is doing well in a pot tho
But I do recommend trying mounting them if you are having trouble growing them in pots and/or you just wish to try it - they do seem to like it

I've found mounted phals thrive much better than they would in a pot, but that could just be me. As for extra care, water daily, fertilize about as regularly. I prefer to mount my phals with their leaves pointed down (basically upside down). This is (I've read) the way they grow naturally, so they tend to prosper mounted this way. I've actually been considering unpotting all of my phals & tossing them on mounts, just because of how much better they seem to do. Depending upon your growing conditions & area, you might need to water a mount more than once per day.

Here's a few pics of my phal mounts. You'll notice the gigantic new roots growing from one of them - that plant was in bad shape prior to me mounting it.

hope i was any help whatsoever.

I have two of my Phals on mounts. One is on cork and the other on Manzanita...I think. I place a small moist mound of sphagnum moss on the wood and then position the plant upside down on top of the sphagnum and carefully secure the plant to the mount with a long thin strip of panty hose. I use a small amount of sphagnum and water the mounts once daily. I don't recommend watering again until the Sphag dries out. A large glob of sphag would take longer to dry between waterings. A few older roots might be lost as the plant adjusts to the mount, but a Phal. usually perks up and begins making fresh roots within a few weeks. The new fresh roots will eventually attach themselves to their new home. These are my Phal mounts.

I am encouraged by the responses and will give this method a try. Next time at the lake i'll look for some good driftwood.

I grow lots of phals in pots, but I tend to mount my species phals, primary hybrids and others still really close to their "species roots" and those with really short stems. (Meaning there isn't much space between the stacks of leaves.) Mounting helps keep water out of hte crown. Here are a couple of pictures. Also you probably don't want to mount phals that tend to send big tall, upright spikes. The presentation is best on phals with shorter more pendant spikes.
