A friend in Australia has a large collection of Tols. He said to mount them without using any sphag.( Here is a perfect example of what works in one evnvironment not working in another.) In the year that they were mounted as he directed, I had no new growth and no new root attachment. At least that made it easy to take them off their mounts and put them in pots, lol.

While they were mounted a few of them died and another grower said that it was probably rot caused by water being trapped in the crown at night. She said she shakes her plants and turns them upside down to make sure no water is trapped in those fans. Anyway, since I have put them in pots I have plenty of new growth and even a couple of spikes Of course they are outside now with better air circulation, but you are right--it is a learning experience! Tolumnia blooms are awesome so keep at it

I have 3....one mounted and 2 in cork chips in net baskets. All three are doing fabulous but the one on the mount is growing slower than the other 2. If I lived in FL...w/the higher humidity...I'd probably only have them mounted.

Like mspat..being in Oh...I find they grow better for me w/the fast draining/drying medium around the roots.

In my experience, these guys need lots of bright light. I have mine mounted on a cork slab, and in the summer, hang it on an outside light post in the direct sun. It loves it. I heavily mist it every morning(unless it's rained overnight) with MSU at 125. It's spiking right now.
