phal in spike--safe to repot? Female
Question phal in spike--safe to repot?

I have a Phal in spike and growing new roots. It is currently residing in Sphag. Not that I have anything against Sphag, it just does not work well in my growing conditions. I do like to use it in my bark mixture. Anyways, I have never repotted a Phal in spike. Will it cause any problems for the spike?

I've repotted many Phals while in spike, and in bloom, without a problem.

Shouldn't be a problem, but be very careful so the spike doesn't snap off. (been there, done that-LOL)

Only thing to worry about is the spike not getting broken. It's an easy thing to do when you are paying attention to the root end of the plant, the spike end is flying around!

Thank you all for your quick responses. And glad to know that repotting should not be a problem. And thanks so much for reminding me to be careful of the spike while messing with the roots, now it'll be in my head and thinking about it. I wouldn't even have thought about it until it was too late! Well I am off to do some repotting.

I agree, I've repotted in spike with no problems.

Danger of breaking the spike is another matter. My hubby is often watching and yells "careful" several times as I'm paying attention to the roots and almost knocking off the spike. I've not actually broken one yet but I put that down to him keeping an eye on what I am doing
