Verical is a great idea as long as you don't need to get to your window. If your Phals love the amount of light you have, I wouldn't move them; Miltonia and Paphs would probably do well with the same amount of light. Oncidium, Dendrobium, Cattleya and Brassia usually like moderate light in an E, cool W or filtered south window. I have my Oncidium, Dendrobium, Mtdm. and Brassia in the first row by my S/W facing sliding door, with my Phals and Paphs, behind them. Then my Cymbidium and Zygo are in a different room with a southern exposure with filtered PM sun. That seems to work well for me. I'm not sure what other kind of other chids you have, but I hope this helps. Keep in mind that these are general guidelines and there are exceptions to every rule--then there are hybrids such as my Mtdm. which is a Miltonia X Oncidium. Bottom line is if it works for you and your chids then all is well. You can always experiment until you have the right balance for your chids. Additional artificial light is also an option.

I used that type of shelving for my spider tanks but would like to come up with something a little nicer for the orchids since they're in the bedroom. Any idea of how to merge decorative with functional for this?

Cover them entirely with blooming orchids so no one can see the shelving? That's my plan

I think the rattan would be perfect with the orchids. When I lived on the fringes of a tropical rain forest in the Philippines, I would often go for a hike to see orchids in the wild. They were frequently growing on trees side-by-side with rattan vines. Orchids and ratten are a natural I say go for it.

Just to jump in - a southwest window would probably be great for orchids, provided the light isn't so strong that it burns their leaves!! I think catts would like that sort of light very much!

hmmm, the windows in the LR are too shaded by a lovely HUGE old oak that I am not willing to sacrifice but I may be able to try the window on the hubby's side of the room. Of course he may decide to move out if yet MORE plants invade his space especially those wierd epiphytes!

Oh I have already spoken with the husband about attempting to add a sun-room off my side of the bedroom He replied that it was outside his skill level The exterior of the house is real brick so I don't know how feasable it would really be but if we could build a deck, put in french doors, wall length windows and a roof it would be AWESOME!!!
Somehow I don't think it will be happening anytime soon though. I am still waiting on my plant window for the kitchen too.
