It's glad to hear the most of the Orchids survived all that. I know with Bill_Asia, it can be risky, but congrats on your new, hopefully much more healthy now, orchids! Best of luck, and if they ever rebloom, we'd love to see some pics!

Hi Kathy,

All is not lost.. they will survive. We import alot of bareroot from Thailand which take weeks to get to us. Sometimes the roots die before they get to us, but with a little soak and the removal of the dead roots then placing the plants in the desired plant medium; the plants usually survive. Ensure the plant is placed in a semi shaded area or in a greenhouse after potting.
You have been getting some good advice. After potting, about 2 weeks after, you may start using a high nitrogen fertilizer 'weakly' weekly as this will promote the growth of new roots. Good luck.

You now know one dealer from whom you should not buy.

These plants should not be sold. They are Hawaiian or far east imports that have been dry too long.

If you try placing these roots in a pot the chance of fungal rot is very high. Your photos show that not a single plant has even one actively growing root. This time of year you should see green tips or brown tips on the end of each root. These are the actively growing roots.

When I have an important plant I want to save I cut off all the roots and leave them on the bench bare root until new roots start. This is not a technique for beginners and certainly something that should not be necessary for newly purchased plants.

It can take a long time to start new roots. I recently experimented with a C leopardi that was 3 feet tall with no good roots. I cut all the roots and left it on the bench soaking it often in Vermi-Liquid, Companion anti-fungicide and Essentials grow hormones.

Over 4 months with nothing to show except shriveled leaves, then 20 magnificent flowers still with no roots. A month later and 30 new roots but still an ugly shriveled plant that flowers magnificently.

All Cattleya roots rot. One famous grower once said if the plant grows faster than the rot it lives and if it grows slower it dies.

Even your Vanda, which may survive, is in terrible shape. There should be actively growing roots on a Vanda all the time.

I once took a shipment of Vanda from the far east and the Vanda looked OK some even had flowers but three years later I still have dozens of non-blooming Vanda. They seemed cheap at $2 for blooming size but they were really way too expensive. It takes too long to recover from bad treatment

I think some of your orchids will pull through, don't give up on them yet. Just don't be surprised if a few croak.

Check this out, I think you'll like these two vendors a lot. They're from Hawaii and they've got some pretty cool good quality stuff at more than reasonable prices. You won't regret buying anything from these people.

Try:

Tropical Orchid Farm: Tropical Orchid Farm

and

Exotic Orchids of Maui: Exotic Orchids of Maui - Home

My first suggestion would be to go look at Exotic Orchids of Maui, I think they've got many plants that many people enjoy having and are not very difficult for those first starting out in the orchid hobby.

Tropical Orchid Farm has much more exotic stuff, but their quality is very good to excellent. Maybe when you get your feet wet, you can look into their plants.

Oak Hill Gardens also has nice stuff for a relatively inexpensive price. However, many of their plants are non-blooming sized seedlings or near blooming sized seedlings.

I'm sure there are bargains with many of the smaller vendors as well.

Check out some of the plants that people on the OB have to offer too. They look pretty well grown as well.

Don't be afraid to ask around the OB for plants, some people might actually have divisions or seedlings available. Some of them can be pretty rare.

A plant that you thought would be a goner may pull through, but the one you thought would be okay turns out to be the problem plant (I've actually had this happen to me several times).

It's funny that you should say that. They have been looking pretty good all this time and now just yesterday the leaf edges have begun turning black and falling off. Here I thought the battle was won for those particular plants and now they die off. Going to go to town to see if I can get something to stave it off... Not sure what, but something...

Hi Kathy!

I've still got some Epi. Siam Jade 'Avo' and Blc. Dals Rapture 'Watercolors' seedlings with your name on them

I'll be happy to mail them to you if you PM me your mailing address but as soon as the new semester calms down I can meet you in W. Burlington and hand deliver them. Make sure you save space for them in your growing area!

I've had some great luck with Carmela orchid lately.

Bingo,
How nice of you to still be offering Kathy some of your seedlings.
