Hi Kathy,

I'm sad that you had such a bad experience with your orchid purchase. Don't get too discouraged because there are a lot of good vendors out there.

I love to watch orchids grow so I usually buy compots containing about 50-100 tiny seedlings and pot them out into 2.5 inch pots.

I potted out 2 compots on May 9th and I now have many, many seedlings of Epc. Siam Jade and Blc. Dals'Rapture Watercolors; all are doing great. They were tiny-- less the half an inch first set of leaves base-tip; no pseudobulbs. Quite a few of them are now over 3-4 inches base to tip with 2 pseudobulbs plus new growth.

I got the compots on sale-- buy 1 get 1 free for $25 shipping included! This is a very inexpensive way to get orchids and you don't have to flask. The trouble is, who wants 50 plants of the same mericlone !!!

I would be happy to share some of these seedlings with you. They are growing fast; taking up more and more precious growing space.

Danville is only about an hour or so from Macomb and I frequently shop in West Burlington. I would be glad to meet you at the mall and hand you a couple of orchid seedlings. They should be good for adoption in several weeks.

Don't get too discouraged and don't give up on orchids!

I'll say a prayer for you.

I am not sure what water culture is, but if you have the time to explain it, I will certainly try it. Thank you so very much for your time. Kathy

Bingo,

Bless your heart! That is so kind of you! I would love to have some but must pay you for them. Or, in a few weeks, we will have an explosion of tomatoes in our garden. All are strictly organic. In a few more weeks we should have an explosion of zucchini. (Organic as well.) Would you like any? Will send you an e-mail about it. Hugs and many thanks, Kathy

I ordered several plants from this vendor about a year ago myself. They arrived in the same condition. I ended up cutting most of the roots off and the plants grew new ones. I am happy to report that all of them made it, althought I have not ordered any more plants from this vendor. Hang in there, these guys are tougher than you might think!

I was wondering if I should be cutting some of these roots off. I mean those that are smushy. Is this recommended or no?

Definitely a good idea to cut off the dead mushy roots. Make sure to use a sterile cutting tool.

Kathy, this is a fantastic thread by Sun rm.N.E.
http://www.orchidboard.com/community...r-culture.html
I have put rootless phals, catts and dens in water culture and grown nice healthy roots.
I would cut all the rotten roots, spray or dunk them in hydrogen peroxide or listerine or some other antiseptic and put them in water. I use cut down plastic soda pop bottles and add a little KLN root hormone to the water. I just cover the rhizome with water.
You will get a lot of good water culture information and pictures from the thread mentioned above.
Good luck.
Joann

Kathy, I had a Vanda which looked very much like yours. Only nubbins instead of roots. I thought it was a goner but I placed it in water culture and after about 6 months it had developed enough roots to place it with my other Vandas.

It will be a battle to get your money back. More than likely they will offer to send you new plants, but they will arrive in similar condition to what you have received so far. I was able to get some money back from the seller in question, but it was a long drawn out battle. If I was a beginning orchid grower I would of had no chance as of course they were trying to blame myself and my growing conditions for the fact that their rootless orchids died (despite managing to save 4 out of the 6 in the order).

I guess the good news is orchids are more resilient then given credit for. I would start out by trimming away all dead roots. This means after you have soaked the roots, cutting away any who or mushy or completely dehydrated looking. Healthy roots are usually white or green and slightly plump feeling (even if they are very fine roots they should have plump feel to them). If any of the plants still have 3 or 4 (or more) good roots I would dunk them in some hydrogen peroxide and then you can plant them into whatever medium you are going to use (like a bark orchid mix). I would try and keep them as humid as possible for awhile, but they should start developing new roots and be OK. Those that are in essence rootless after cutting you need to try water culture or sphag and bag to try and grow some new roots. Be patient, it takes some time. Good luck.
