Yes it finally stopped raining here 24/7 about 2 weeks ago. But it came back again 2nite for the arts fest!
So i cleaned up the orchids roots and tried to remove as much of the rot that i could and dabbed its wounds with hydrogen peroxide then dusted it with cinnamon.
I'm letting it dry out for a day or so, then i'm going to try the water culture. Keeping my fingers crossed. Should i use distilled water or would rain water be ok?

Elizabeth

Seeing as it does not rain for *&%& here in San Diego. I am going to use good old fashioned municipal supplies. Right now the water I have in there has a good helping of K-L-N.

How deep can you put the canes under water. I have two or three "canes" that are only about 1/2 and inch high and they are totally under water.

I only hve about an inch of water in the plastic cup right now. Might have to fandangle somthing to prop it up a little in a nicer container at some point. I assume once it starts to recover I could move it into S/H media?

It looks like the base of the canes are rotted. You probably won't get any new roots. When you're ready to try something else, cut the healthy parts of the canes off. Cut them into sections with 2 or 3 nodes each. Lay them down in moist sphagnum and bag them. With luck, you'll have some new plants in 4 or 5 months.

I see a couple of good roots, try to repot in the smallest pot that the roots will fit into, use only the bark, and water once a week.

No misting, try to keep any direct draft from your fan off of chids, you just want the room air to circulate. You may have to anchor it in the pot. but they can recover. They like to be real crowded, for example I have one that is two ft tall (3 bulbs)in a 2" pot, with 22 blooms. A little extreme but it thrives.

I have saved several rescues from the box stores and as long as the stems don't go soft, it is alive, just give it time. The first thing I do is get it out of the spag, and into a smaller pot. The plants are sold by pot size and they are usually a small plant jacked-up to a bigger pot selling for more money..You certainly have a lot of different ways to choose from Good Luck!
