thanks alot.. (oddest looking phal)
Haha my coworker got me to go to the market and pick up two orchids for her... but we all should know, orchids addicts don't just buy for others...<< if they see something they like it gets swooped up right?
well i found this little oddball snuggled in with the rest of the yellow phals.
Ive never see a phal like it (yet) but its like its mutated and has THREE female parts to each flower and no male parts, and only three outside petals

Yeap, that's what we call peloric. I've heard that sometimes they will revert back to a standard form next time they flower, but others will stay that way every time.
It's a really pretty one that you've got there.

Rosie, do you know what causes them to be peloric? If the next bloom can show normal blooms, it can't be only genetics I guess?
I have a Phal that had normal blooms and "wanna be" peloric blooms. There must be an enivronmental factor? But which one?

It is genetic. Pelorism is defined as having symmetry where none is expected, or not finding it where it is expected.
In orchids, we expect the asymmetry of one of the petals being in the form of a lip. In most cases, the pelorism is displayed as all three of the petals looking like a lip, but in rare cases, none of them do.
