Phal cornu-cervi is a repeat bloomer from the same spike. The spikes are unusual and plentiful. Flowers are not gigantic though like many of the hybrids. But this is a show stopper in its own right.
There's the normal yellow and reddish-brown variant and the yellow variant.
Phal equestris is a smallish Phal that's super easy to grow.
Phal stuartiana has some nice flowers too, but has the added bonus of leaf patterns.
Same with Phal philippinensis, Phal schilleriana, and Phal sanderiana.
Zygopetalums are nice too and they're fragrant.
Neofinetia falcata are miniatures, easy to grow, fragrant, and have a nice display of flowers during the summer months.
Neostylis are easy, fragrant, and small growing.
Oncidium Twinkle 'Fragrance Fantasy' is another nice one. There's a white one and a red one. I personally like the white ones. These bloom in the late spring and summer months.
I don't know enough about Phal hybrids, but they're plentiful and you might want to keep in mind what her favorite color is.
A word about Phals is that they're typically spring bloomers. The reason they're "in flower" all year round is because they're induced to bloom at any time during the year. Growers know what the trigger mechanism is and force them to flower out of season. So don't be surprised if your friend is able to grow the Phals out to be more than one year old, that it doesn't want to put out blooms at random times of the year so readily.
